dear everyone

this is the first update in awhile, and the first update of the year. this year i already have two shows scheduled, and im working on three others. the first show of the year will be a group show in Falmouth, Cornwall, UK, the show is called Resound, and it will be the first time i have shown any of my sound art, and the second scheduled in showing of my work will be a NTY split show with my good friend maiza hixson. my end of the show will consist of around 15 drawings and other works i have constructed over the last year and a half, and will be my first serious showing of my non-conceptual work/drawings i have done in over 5 years.
im also working on a short book of drawings that will hopefully be available this june. it will consist of around 30 drawings plus some text, and will be in an edition of 50, and one of my drawings will be on the LP version of a record by the band soft cheque. also.....people have been ask me to talk about/show people how i make my work so i decided to make this video

001]...that I wasnt suppose to live past the age of 5, and if I did I would have been deaf and blind.

002] that when I was 14 years old I was forced to take a test, and the test said that I had the brain of a 20 year old

003] that when I was in the 7th grade I won a calender contest, but they couldnt use my painting because it had too much detail.

004] that I could have got married when I was 27 years old

005] that I took a solo train trip to Nebraska

006] that excluding 1 ½ years of living with my mom after my dad died, and having a roommate for 3 years....i have pretty much lived by myself since 2001

007] that I have shown my art in Pennsylvania, Indianapolis, DC, Louisville, and various other places in my life

008] that I was phone interviewed by an online art magazine based out of the Czech republic, and have been in art blogs based out of Italy, Canada, and the UK, and as I was writing this post I got an email that said im currently in an art blog/magazine based out of Chile

009] I once got 20 free frames from polaroid....they gave them to me, because they liked my work.

010] that I have been in and done 7 solo shows, 4 split shows, and 17 group shows since the year 2000, and ill be in at least 3 more next year

i recently bought a tape duplication machine from ebay, and it has given me the idea to start an old school tape label , but instead of putting out stuff by people with music/sound back grounds i would like to put out material by people with visual and poetic backgrounds.

the machine i bought from ebay can make 3 copies of the master cassettes at once, and it only dups in MONO. for logistical purposes each release will be 20 min long [10min per side], i plan to make 60 copies of each tape, and the artist will get 30 copies. each cassette will sell for 8USD ppd. i also plan to release 1 tape a month starting in February of next year.

1. even though i grew up disabled and around the disabled...i personally cant stand most disabled people.

2. my most fulfilling non-sexual emotional relationships with people of the opposite sex have been with married women, and lesbians.

3. ive only had one one night stand

4. i cant stand most men below the age of 27..even when i was below the age of 27. i still couldn't stand most of them.

5. i secretly want to move to either san fran, philly, or chicago, and think i would be happier far away from everyone i know.

6. i personally don't think im a very good artist, and im always surprised when people like what i make or say. ive always made art because if i didn't make art...id explode.

7. im a very bad speller.

8. i hate the word experimental, and every time an artist uses that word to describe the stuff they make...its always boring as all out.

9. my biggest fear in life is that i will die without ever getting married.

10. even though i consider myself to be an agnostic. i cannot stand it when people make fun of christians/religious people.

11. ive always wanted to make a pop band.

It's the answer that led those who have been told for so long by so many to be cynical, and fearful, and doubtful of what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day.

It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America.

I just received a very gracious call from Senator McCain. He fought long and hard in this campaign, and he's fought even longer and harder for the country he loves. I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last sixteen years, the rock of our family and the love of my life, our nation's next First Lady, Michelle Obama. Sasha and Malia, I love you both so much, and you have earned the new puppy that's coming with us to the White House. And while she's no longer with us, I know my grandmother is watching, along with the family that made me who I am. I miss them tonight, and know that my debt to them is beyond measure.

To my campaign manager David Plouffe, my chief strategist David Axelrod, and the best campaign team ever assembled in the history of politics - you made this happen, and I am forever grateful for what you've sacrificed to get it done.

But above all, I will never forget who this victory truly belongs to - it belongs to you.

I was never the likeliest candidate for this office. We didn't start with much money or many endorsements. Our campaign was not hatched in the halls of Washington - it began in the backyards of Des Moines and the living rooms of Concord and the front porches of Charleston.

It was built by working men and women who dug into what little savings they had to give five dollars and ten dollars and twenty dollars to this cause. It grew strength from the young people who rejected the myth of their generation's apathy; who left their homes and their families for jobs that offered little pay and less sleep; from the not-so-young people who braved the bitter cold and scorching heat to knock on the doors of perfect strangers; from the millions of Americans who volunteered, and organized, and proved that more than two centuries later, a government of the people, by the people and for the people has not perished from this Earth. This is your victory.

I know you didn't do this just to win an election and I know you didn't do it for me. You did it because you understand the enormity of the task that lies ahead. For even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime - two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century. Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives for us. There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after their children fall asleep and wonder how they'll make the mortgage, or pay their doctor's bills, or save enough for college. There is new energy to harness and new jobs to be created; new schools to build and threats to meet and alliances to repair.

The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even one term, but America - I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you - we as a people will get there.

There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won't agree with every decision or policy I make as President, and we know that government can't solve every problem. But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will listen to you, especially when we disagree. And above all, I will ask you join in the work of remaking this nation the only way it's been done in America for two-hundred and twenty-one years - block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand.

What began twenty-one months ago in the depths of winter must not end on this autumn night. This victory alone is not the change we seek - it is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were. It cannot happen without you.

So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism; of service and responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves, but each other. Let us remember that if this financial crisis taught us anything, it's that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers - in this country, we rise or fall as one nation; as one people.

Let us resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long. Let us remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House - a party founded on the values of self-reliance, individual liberty, and national unity. Those are values we all share, and while the Democratic Party has won a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress. As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, "We are not enemies, but friends...though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection." And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn - I may not have won your vote, but I hear your voices, I need your help, and I will be your President too.

And to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments and palaces to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten corners of our world - our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared, and a new dawn of American leadership is at hand. To those who would tear this world down - we will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security - we support you. And to all those who have wondered if America's beacon still burns as bright - tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from our the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity, and unyielding hope.

For that is the true genius of America - that America can change. Our union can be perfected. And what we have already achieved gives us hope for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.

This election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for generations. But one that's on my mind tonight is about a woman who cast her ballot in Atlanta. She's a lot like the millions of others who stood in line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing - Ann Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.

She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars on the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn't vote for two reasons - because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.

And tonight, I think about all that she's seen throughout her century in America - the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the times we were told that we can't, and the people who pressed on with that American creed: Yes we can.

At a time when women's voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot. Yes we can.

When there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs and a new sense of common purpose. Yes we can.

When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was there to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved. Yes we can.

She was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a bridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that "We Shall Overcome." Yes we can.

A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was connected by our own science and imagination. And this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change. Yes we can.

America, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much more to do. So tonight, let us ask ourselves - if our children should live to see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see? What progress will we have made?

This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment. This is our time - to put our people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American Dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth - that out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope, and where we are met with cynicism, and doubt, and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people:

Yes We Can. Thank you, God bless you, and may God Bless the United States of America.

Sentences on Conceptual Art

Conceptual artists are mystics rather than rationalists. They leap to conclusions that logic cannot reach.
Rational judgements repeat rational judgements.
Irrational judgements lead to new experience.
Formal art is essentially rational.
Irrational thoughts should be followed absolutely and logically.
If the artist changes his mind midway through the execution of the piece he compromises the result and repeats past results.
The artist's will is secondary to the process he initiates from idea to completion. His wilfulness may only be ego.
When words such as painting and sculpture are used, they connote a whole tradition and imply a consequent acceptance of this tradition, thus placing limitations on the artist who would be reluctant to make art that goes beyond the limitations.
The concept and idea are different. The former implies a general direction while the latter is the component. Ideas implement the concept.
Ideas can be works of art; they are in a chain of development that may eventually find some form. All ideas need not be made physical.
Ideas do not necessarily proceed in logical order. They may set one off in unexpected directions, but an idea must necessarily be completed in the mind before the next one is formed.
For each work of art that becomes physical there are many variations that do not.
A work of art may be understood as a conductor from the artist's mind to the viewer's. But it may never reach the viewer, or it may never leave the artist's mind.
The words of one artist to another may induce an idea chain, if they share the same concept.
Since no form is intrinsically superior to another, the artist may use any form, from an expression of words (written or spoken) to physical reality, equally.
If words are used, and they proceed from ideas about art, then they are art and not literature; numbers are not mathematics.
All ideas are art if they are concerned with art and fall within the conventions of art.
One usually understands the art of the past by applying the convention of the present, thus misunderstanding the art of the past.
The conventions of art are altered by works of art.
Successful art changes our understanding of the conventions by altering our perceptions.
Perception of ideas leads to new ideas.
The artist cannot imagine his art, and cannot perceive it until it is complete.
The artist may misperceive (understand it differently from the artist) a work of art but still be set off in his own chain of thought by that misconstrual.
Perception is subjective.
The artist may not necessarily understand his own art. His perception is neither better nor worse than that of others.
An artist may perceive the art of others better than his own.
The concept of a work of art may involve the matter of the piece or the process in which it is made.
Once the idea of the piece is established in the artist's mind and the final form is decided, the process is carried out blindly. There are many side effects that the artist cannot imagine. These may be used as ideas for new works.
The process is mechanical and should not be tampered with. It should run its course.
There are many elements involved in a work of art. The most important are the most obvious.
If an artist uses the same form in a group of works, and changes the material, one would assume the artist's concept involved the material.
Banal ideas cannot be rescued by beautiful execution.
It is difficult to bungle a good idea.
When an artist learns his craft too well he makes slick art.
These sentences comment on art, but are not art.

work 001] endurance work for dancing

in this work ill explorre not only my own body, but other people
expectations of what a body like mine can and cannot do. between two
set times for around 3 or so hours i will dance almost nonstop. the
music will mostly be 80s and 90s dance music, i will be dressed in a
suit, and the dance floor will be constructed out of a large rug. the
work will be documented and then projected in the room that the work
was performed in.

work 002] all your questions will be answered version two

in this work i will be doing a live version of a web work that i did
that involved me answering any question no matter how personal or
mundane that people had either about being disabled or about anything
at all. the live version of this work will involve me sitting behind a
desk in a mostly empty room every work day of the week for 15 business
days. again i will be in a suit, ill be sitting behind a standard
desk, and the questions and answers will be documented and placed
either on the wall/s of the room or archived in a data bases that will
be available to the public.

Complain About X-Rated Security Screenings

When travelers go to the airport, they know what kind of security to expect: luggage searches, metal detectors and shoe inspections.

It's all part of our post 9-11 reality enforced by the Transportation Security Adminstration. But as CBS 2 Investigator Pam Zekman reports, thousands of travelers have complained that some of these screenings can become abusive and even x-rated.

For arguing with a TSA agent, Robin Kassner wound up being slammed to the floor. She's filed a lawsuit.

"I kept begging them over and over again get off of me ... and they wouldn't stop," Kassner said.

And it wasn't enough for another woman to show TSA agents nipple rings that set off a metal detector. The agents forced her to take them out.

Mandi Hamlin said, "I had to get pliers and pull it apart."

In Chicago, people like Robert Perry are subjected to exhaustive security checks. He was patted down, his wheel chair was examined and his hands were swabbed, all in public view in a see-through room at the security checkpoint. Perry, 71, is not alone

"It's humiliation," Perry said.

Perry was also taken to a see-through room by a TSA agent when his artificial knee set off the metal detector.

"He yelled at me to get the belt off. 'I told you to get the belt off.' So I took the belt off. He ran his hands down over and pulled the pants down, they went down around my ankle," Perry said.

At that point, Perry was standing in his underwear in public view. He asked to see a supervisor. That made things worse.

"She was yelling 'I have power, I have power, I have power," Perry said. The power to stop him from flying to Florida with his wife that day to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

"It makes you feel like you have no rights," Perry said.

Perry said he always alerts TSA agents about his metal knee and wonders why they can't just check his leg.

"If somebody told me that I would save the people on the airplane by taking my pants off out in public out there, I wouldn't mind doing it, but this was not necessary," Perry said.

TSA officials said that when the metal detectors go off, their agents must resolve what caused the alarm. But experts have said it's important to use common sense when balancing security and customer service.

Carlos Villarreal, former director of security for the Sears Tower, said proper training is crucial. "When you're wanding somebody and you can identify which part of the body set of the alarm, that should be sufficient to clear a person," Villarreal said.

But all too often, it's not enough for 16-year old Michael Angone. She frequently flies as a member of the Chicago Children's Choir.

"I've had to completely take my pants off and show them like my entire leg," Angone said.

As a baby, Angone was diagnosed with cancer. Her parents, both Chicago police officers, had to have her leg amputated. She said she always warns TSA security agents that her prosthetic leg will set off the metal detector, but many insist on doing an embarrassing full body pat-down.

"I feel like I'm being felt up in public," Angone said.

Her father Bob Angone wanted to know, "What's the reason for all the feeling up, you know the groping at the back of the neck, the chest, underneath the bra, all the groping on her body, her buttocks?"

CBS 2 News asked the TSA those questions, but got no answers.

"The key word here is reasonable, and they have gone off the track. They are not reasonable," Bob Angone said.

The TSA declined to comment on the Angone and Perry cases, but the agency has announced that soon, passengers who set off an alarm that cannot be resolved will have a choice: Agree to a physical pat-down or what some believe is an even worse invasion of privacy.

This fall, O'Hare International Airport will get its first advanced digital x-ray machine. It allows TSA agents to see through clothes and discover any hidden weapons. Critics have likened it to a virtual strip search.

A spokesman said that out of 2 billion passengers screened nationwide since 9-11, there have been only 110,000 abuse complaints.

As for the nipple ring case, TSA did change its procedures regarding body piercings.

My work is about my life as a person with a disability, I use both humor and seriousness as away of dissecting and examining the world in which both you and I live in. I frequently cite and use history, the human body, my personal life and the experiences of others as a means of questioning and re-examining our societies view point on the concept that is normalcy.

although i have been known to use everything from collage to drawing my main medium is photography. this artistic medium allows me to make work that can be as big or as small as i would like it to be and it also allows me to over come most of my physical limitations.

the process for creating a works is that i first create either a thumb nail sketch or i write up the concept of the work or series of works in which i would like to create. for example if i want to do a series of photographic based works i would first make a list of subject matters that i could take photos of and then i make another list of how the subject could be depicted.

in the self portrait series i first came up with the concept of doing a series of nudes of people with disabilities, then i thought about why i should do so, and if the reason to do so was a concept that i felt was worth the effort to do. as i was trying to find models for the project i came to the conclusion that it would be both easier and more financially reasonable for me to create a series of self portraits. the reason i came to that conclusion was that at the time i was and am still living in a very small apartment, and my financial means was and still is so ii could not afford to hire models for the series. plus by doing a self portraits i could have twenty-four hour access to my main model, and i could also take the time to really explore every angle, shape, and texture contained within in its/my body.

my work differs from others in that instead of a non-disabled person documenting people with disabilities, and in many ways and forms looking at us as chartes and stereotypes of people that physical differ from the norm i allow the viewer to see us as the many shades of emotions and opinions we actually are. i also allow the viewer to see the disabled world through the eyes of a person with a disability.

my goal as an artist is to create work that is elegant, powerful, emotionally layered and embedded with both social and personal messages that vary from humorous to dark. i would also like to get to the point that i will have no excuses when it comes to access to the help and equipment that i would need to make the best work that i can make.

the work i will make using the money will consist of a series of 16 by 20 inch full color lambda prints of people with varying disabilities, and body types. the funds will allow me to hire models, get a newer computer, get a proper studio, lighting, back drops , a studio assistant, and the ability to to edit and print using the latest equipment and processes.

because i will mostly be using mostly people with disabilities as models a proper studio with room enough toaccommodate both my wheelchair and the other persons equipment will be necessary. plus i will need an artist assistant to help me set up back drops, help with transportation to and from the studio, and move things like lighting and props. a laptop computer with the latest photo editing software will allow me to do most all of the editing, resizing, and proofing in the studio, it will also cut down on down time between photo shoots by allowing me to do some of the work eathier at home or in the studio without having the artist assistant present. i will find models by putting ads up in local news papers, websites , galleries, and places of business and i will attempt to do at least one photo shoot a week. after each photo shoot i will edit down and pick at least two photos to make proofs of these proofs will be made using a small yet high quality printer. at the end of each month i will choose at least three photos to print at a local professional grade photo processing establishment , and then i will frame them in a simple frame. at the end of the allotted time i hope to have at least 30 photographs finished and ready to show.
